What is DBT?
A DBT program focuses on building a life worth living and enhancing emotional functioning. As an adaptation of traditional CBT, DBT includes the cognitive and behavioural techniques used in standard CBT while adding mindfulness approaches and acceptance-based practices. To date, 30 randomised controlled trials have been conducted demonstrating the effectiveness of this treatment approach.
According to a DBT framework, impulsive and self-destructive behaviors (such as suicide, self-injury, shoplifting, binge eating, excessive spending) are caused by two interrelated systems:
A biological vulnerability to emotions (determined by genetics)
Chronic invalidation (determined by the environment)
Types of DBT
Standard DBT
DBT is a multimodal therapy, involving 4 modes of treatment. During this treatment, the individual receives:
- Individual Therapy
- DBT Skills Training
- Phone Skills Coaching
- All therapists also must attend weekly consultation meetings to ensure they follow the DBT model
A comprehensive DBT Treatment is the gold-standard treatment for individuals with personality disorders since it is the most evidence based. Standard DBT is also recommended for individuals who have multple problem behaviours that are influenced by emotion dysregulation.

DBT Skills Group (DBT-S)
Studies have shown that DBT skills training can be effective for some individuals after 20 weeks. For those with a desire to learn how to better emotions and have healthier relationships but do who do not require extensive clinical support our six-monh intensive skills-only program is ideal.
A DBT skills only course teaches five core skill modules
- Mindfulness training
- Distress tolerance
- Emotion regulation
- Interpersonal effectiveness
- Walking along the middle path
Group sessions last 90 minutes, and two DBT trained clinicians facilitate them.

DBT Individual Therapy (DBT-I)
Studies have shown that DBT-adherent individual therapy can be effective for some individuals when carries out for over a year for the purpose of reducing suicidality despite slower improvements in anxiety and depression (Linehan et al., 2015)
For those with a desire to learn how to better regulate emotions and have healthier relationships but who do not require extensive clinical support, DBT-I might be a good option.
